With the main themes of Leeds 30th International Film Festival being light and shadow, I decided to experiment with creating shadows from my pictograms designs themselves, which could work as part of the final wayfinding system.
For this I took one of my original pictogram designs and cut it out of mountboard. One of the problems I encountered during this development stage was that not all of the smaller details would be possible to cut out, as they would have nothing to hold onto, therefore this left me to work with the main shapes of the building's form.

From this template I shone a light through the gaps in order to create artificial shadows, which I will then image trace onto Illustrator and cut out of black vinyl to use in a similar way as a supergraphic. These will act as my main pictograms and avoids the problem of the design changing direction as the natural light changes throughout the day. This means the wayfinding system will still be available whatever time of the day.
