To use alongside my pictograms, I looked at creating another set of signs to show direction and walking distance between venues. To do this I used a template cut out from black card based on some of my initial ideas within my process. For example, I did not use the full shape of the characters, but cut a bit off at the ends and kept a border around them to represent a shadow in themselves. Similarly to my pictograms, I then used this template to shine light through and create varying shadows.
The numbers in the middle show walking time between the venues, whilst the direction of travel is represented through the angle of the shadow. The sharper the corner of the shadow, this is the direction of travel. These will be used accompanying my shadow pictograms with the pictogram representing the next venue and the other showing direction and time to the venue next to it.
I have chosen for both of these designs to be cut out of black vinyl so that they are suitable and durable for use outdoors, so that the wayfinding system is still available during all weather conditions. The use of black again links back to the monochromatic theme and the idea of shadows, but also helps the pictograms to stand out against various backgrounds so the signs do not get lost in their surroundings.

In addition to this, I looked at using the off-cuts from this template to create different shadows, however I felt these could be more confusing for visitors using the system, as the shapes do not give definitive or sharper corners for directional purposes.
