OUGD405 - Studio Brief 01 - Initial Ideas: Pictograms

To start my pictogram ideas, I drew out some quick sketches for each location in my proposed wayfinding system. Some of these included the building itself, iconic features and my own interpretation of their existing logos.

Taking ideas from Adrian Frutiger's book 'Signs, Symbols and their Meaning', I looked at how these pictogram designs could be situated within different shapes and how this could potentially change their meanings. In Chinese culture, a square represents protection and the corners of the Earth, whereas a circle represents eternity. By experimenting with a combination of the two, I filled in the square with colour so that the focus was on the circle and the design within it. However I decided this did not have as many apparent links to film as a circle on it's own, which I used to represent a film leader and film reels. This also meant the pictograms were more standardised in their form. The use of a circular shape also gives each pictogram a universal structure, which follows the approach of Wim Crouwel. The objectivity of these pictograms is beneficial within my specific wayfinding system in that it means my symbols are clear and universal for use in the event, which sees visitors from all over the world.
