Since a lot of Akshay's photography features petrol stations at night, it was decided to conduct some visual research into the aesthetics of petrol stations which could potentially be used to inform design elements throughout the book.
One thing found from this visual research was that typically all petrol stations have neon light strips at the top of their building structures, possibly so that these are easily visible when driving at night. One idea based on this was that this strip of light could be used as a design element for the book, such as on the cover, which could replace the logo on this strip with the title of the book. Potentially this element could also feature throughout the book as a decorative element, utilising different sizes, colours and numbers of the strips. It was also considered that this element reflects the results gained from long exposure photography also featured in Akshay's work.
In this visual research the long columns which feature on the side of petrol stations showing the brand of the station as well as petrol prices was also looked at. The aesthetics of this could be used to help inform elements of layout within the book, particularly for any textual elements there may be. A column grid could also be formed, using this to place imagery too. Potentially this could be used as another cover idea too, using the column at the side of the cover, creating a minimalistic cover design to represent the isolated nature and feel of petrol stations at night.
Another idea based on this visual research was that the book could potentially feature tabs to separate different elements of photography if appropriate, utilising the aesthetics of petrol pump signage whereby they stick out from the podium structure.
Through previous research, it was also found that interludes and breaks in the layout of publications allows the reader to engage better with information. In continuing to explore what is typically seen at petrol stations, one of these was flags which feature ads. The aesthetics of these could potentially be used to create interesting interludes and breaks between content, using flag-like material to create an element of interaction and juxtaposition of content.
