Names refer to a) the original paper size, for example, Royal and b) the fraction an individual page occupies, for example, Octavo - 8th. The image below shows the most common book sizes and formats used within publishing.
This study task asked us to take these standard formats and cut samples of paper to each individual size to produce a sample book, which would be of practical use for the project and future projects whereby book layout and size is an important consideration. The publication I have been asked to design for is a travel and lifestyle guide for travelling designers. The purpose of this publication is to help inform designers' trips and subsequently their future works based on inspiration they find from such journeys. For this reason, the publication must be travel or pocket sized so that travelling with it is made easy.

Based on these standard book formats, it has been considered that the most suitable sizes for this specific publication would either be Foolscap Octavo (8vo) or Crown (8vo) since these are both similar sizes to that of a typical A5 or A6 notebook which can be easily travelled with in a bag or in hand. These sizes are also most similar to that of the Wallpaper* City Guides which were looked at for inspiration during the research process, as this is again pocket sized allowed it to be travelled with and looked at throughout the physical trip to help inform journeys, etc.
