Research into each of the ASPIRE aims showed that some of the main aspects of AIM HIGH were ideas based on achievement, dreaming big, reading regularly, working hard on targets and setting high standards of behaviour. Sketches show how these aspects could potentially be visualised. One idea was to incorporate each letterform into the illustrations for each aim. In this instance, in thinking about the idea of achievement and aiming high, many schools and institutions have 'achievement ladders' which students must make their way up in terms of academic achievements. This idea of a ladder, being a piece of equipment typically used to reach hard-to-reach, high places, was felt suitable for such reasons. Another of the aims being to reach regularly and work on achieving targets in Maths and English, an illustration of a stack of textbooks could also be used to represent the idea of aiming high in a more academic way. The use of a target in another sketch has been used to more obviously represent the idea of setting and aiming for targets.
SAFE AND HEALTHY
Aspects of the safe and healthy aim talks of road safety, internet safety, such as saying no to cyber-bullying, eating healthy and ensuring correct P.E. kits are brought into school in order to keep fit through physical exercise sessions. In order to represent these, one idea was again to incorporate the principles and illustrations into the letterforms in some way, in this instance the S has been used to represent a curved road showing the white markers between lanes. Traffic cones were also thought of when thinking about the idea of road safety, since these are used to mark off sections of roads and pavements to guide cars and pedestrians around potential hazards in the aim of keeping them safe. Other more obvious ideas were to use illustrations of sports equipment and healthy foods to represent keeping your body fit and healthy. Since these banners would be placed within a primary school setting, such illustrations and ideas need to be easily understood by children between the ages of 3 and 11 years, therefore such obvious illustrations are able to communicate these aims more accurately and effectively to such a young age group, as well as parents and teachers.
PUPIL VOICE
Pupil voice adopts principles in working as a team, allowing students to speak out about ideas, listen and respect others students opinions. One specific part of this aim is on the importance of the student council, which allows the school to be represented by the students and take into account their ideas about how the school could be improved, ensuring it is kept a safe and healthy learning environment. One idea on how to represent this aim was to think about what symbolises or defines a student. The dove is the school mascot and so it was thought this could potentially be incorporated into the illustrations in some way to represent the school as a whole. Another idea was to represent the idea of students speaking out for what they believe in as well as participation in lessons through the use of hands up. A megaphone was also considered since this device is designed to project your voice to be heard further, symbolising the importance of students' opinions on the development of the school.
INDEPENDENCE
Aspects of the independence aim talks of students having a responsibility for their own belongings, as well as school equipment and furniture, becoming independent learners and thinkers, producing high quality work, and essentially having a positive attitude to their learning both inside and outside of the school. Since the main focus of this aim is on school equipment to aid learning, it was thought that illustrations of school equipment, such as pencils and paintbrushes could be incorporated to work with the 'I' which has a similar shape to that of a ruler. Another idea was to use a lightbulb as a symbol of thought, something which has been used similarly in cartoons for instance when a character has a bright idea. This could potentially be used as the tittle of a lowercase 'i' in another way of incorporating letterforms into the illustrations, as well as this slight link to the design of cartoons being used to appeal to a young age group who would typically watch such cartoons.
RESPECT AND CARE
The respect and care aim adopts ideas based on ensuring the safety and care of students through respecting their different opinions, the importance of teamwork, and having respect for parents and teachers. However, the main principles within this aim is saying no to any kinds of bullying, homophobia and racism. Based on this principle, sketches show how the LGBTQ flag could be incorporated into the banner design to show respect and support for those who are a part of this community, also used as a important way of telling students to embrace their identities. The symbol of holding hands could also be used to represent the idea of being kind to those who may seem different in some way and the importance of working together.
ENTHUSIASM
The idea of enthusiasm focuses on ensuring students are kept enthusiastic about their work when both inside and outside of school, for instance through educational visits, trying new things and tackling challenges. In representing this illustrations of roads, coaches and historical objects could potentially be produced. Another part of this aim focuses on having a positive attitude towards learning, something which is highlighted throughout the ASPIRE system but more clearly linked to this final aim. This has been visualised through idea sketches showing a lightbulb representational of thought in a similar sense to that of the 'independence' aim. This has also been visualised through a hand pointing up to show enthusiastic participation in class.
