Based on research into the micro-genre of music, Vaporwave, it was found that the aesthetics of the genre, in particular in the use of album art, was something key to the genre in enhancing the communication of wider issues about society, such as consumerism, technology and manufactured nostalgia.
The main aim of the designs were to use the recurring theme of nostalgia to encourage viewers to regress to their childhood days and escape from a less idyllic reality, pairing this with other such ideas presented in Vaporwave. For instance, the pairing of bubblegum packaging and floppy disks play on ideas of neo-classicism and surrealism which place various objects together to produce a juxtaposition which makes it difficult for the viewer to situate the scene in any particular context, and therefore depicts Vaporwave as a successor to surrealism. This is something which can also be seen to enhance its ideas of escape from the 21st Century.
To help communicate such issues of society that Vaporwave music attempts, each individual design uses a different key theme found within its aesthetics.
