OUGD603 - The Batsford Prize - Initial Ideas

Since the brief states that entries should produce innovate and well-crafted interpretations of the theme in terms of subject and/or materials used, and since there is no restriction on the medium used, it was decided that my entry should take the form of a screen-print. It was decided on this medium in order to allow the brief to be both process and research led, whilst the process has also been considered to resonate more with people in its likeness to our nature as humans in not always being perfect and occasionally showing imperfection.

  • Focus on the nature vs. nurture debate - create a screen-print which shows both sides of the debate, split down the middle of the print to show both sides.
  • Or, create two screen prints, one on the nature side of the debate and one on the nurture side of the debate - quote by Rousseau "we do not know what our nature permits us to be" could be overlayed onto imagery, or find other relevant quotes which could be utilised for each print supporting either side of the debate.
  • Imagery could be produced through contemporary collaging methods, then quotes screen-printed over these.
  • Represent a boxing match between the two sides of the debate/boxing ring.
  • Or, show how nature and nurture are interwoven (which is the conclusion from most psychologists today) rather than presenting them individually.
