Based on research into the book, the design aims to communicate theories presented within the book in an imaginative and engaging way which would hopefully appeal to a younger generation of readers who may have initially thought the book was over-complicated.
The design uses ideas based on String Theory, a theoretical framework in which particles are replaced by one-dimensional objects called strings and attempts to describe how these interact with each other through space. The design takes a slightly more handmade approach to image production in that photographic images of the earth, moon and sun have been wrapped in string, which has been done to show how everything in the universe is connected and the interactions which happen within space.
The imagery has been paired with a clear sans-serif typeface, taking inspiration from existing cover designs to be reminiscent of the cover of the first book published in 1988.
