One of these initial ideas was based on the seasons, specifically being that October is situated within autumn. In using this as inspiration, the idea was to communicate a natural theme, visualising elements such as fallen leaves, nuts, pinecones and conkers which were all thought typically convey the autumn months. Imagery would be hand drawn, and digitally coloured and composed into surface patterns to communicate an overall essence of autumn. It was thought that this theme being appropriate to October would also mean that the target market would be able to relate with the theme in their current surroundings during that time of month. In addition, the idea of nature and plants seems to be a recurring theme throughout many of Ohh Deer's existing products which would mean that the products could be placed nicely within their current marketplace.
Another initial idea in visualising the month of October was the theme of Halloween, a public holiday in which people are allowed to be quirky and fun, something which could potentially relate to the existing branding of Ohh Deer as products for quirky and unusual people. The idea of unusual would also be presented through these designs using visual imagery of supernatural things such as ghosts which it is unusual for someone to say they have experienced. In presenting the idea of Halloween, this would produce a more specified theme to work with that would provide some form of restriction to work with since the brief is so broad. This would also allow products to be much more consistent in nature.
Initial design sketches were drawn out in experimenting with what constitutes the idea of Halloween. In response to this the objects which were specified were pumpkins, ghosts, bats and witches cauldron's.
