OUGD503 - Studio Brief 02 - Final Background Designs

Final background designs took a pure handmade approach to design in that every element was hand-cut to shape and placed specifically to produce scenes with a consistent aesthetic throughout. A fairly limited selection of textures produced during the initial production and experimentation stages of design were used throughout these scenes in order to present an element of consistency within these. This ensured that the designs linked to the scene previous to it or after it to show a clear journey of development, as well as ensuring these reflected the narrative of the story to enhance the communication of information. Since the brief stated that submitted designs must show how the style and layout of the illustrations contribute towards the development of the story and characterisation, this was carefully considered in the way described, fulfilling this requirement.

Textures were used appropriately for each object in presenting a realistic texture, which children can familiarise with in the real world and make the scenes more believable as a real story of places and people, which is something that takes inspiration from illustrator Laura Carlin who stated that such elements should be believable for children, giving the story an element of 'realness' that helps with engagement of the illustrations and narrative.

In addition to the use of collage, some smaller elements of imagery and detail have been produced using hand-drawn illustrations for those which proved to be too hard to replicate using collage, such as brick detail, banisters of the stairs and objects arranged on the table within the birds' tea party scene.
