For this reason, variants of the typeface Univers were chosen to be used within the final design in order to reflect a style similar to this first 1988 edition cover. The contemporary typeface also allows for clarity of information in it's universal design, which could be seen as representative of theories of the galaxy which are also universal in their facts.

OUGD503 - Penguin Student Design Award - Type considerations
In considering how type would be used within the designs, the judging criteria was looked back on from the initial research stage of development. The brief states that the design should feel timeless and break boundaries in the same way which the first book did when it was published in 1988. This cover used a bold, sans-serif typeface which took up the majority of blank space on the cover.
For this reason, variants of the typeface Univers were chosen to be used within the final design in order to reflect a style similar to this first 1988 edition cover. The contemporary typeface also allows for clarity of information in it's universal design, which could be seen as representative of theories of the galaxy which are also universal in their facts.
However, despite the typeface presenting a more contemporary nature to the book, which could appeal to a younger generation of readers, it was also decided that this type needed a point of difference to make it look more unique and fitting with the 'starry' aesthetics of the cover design. In doing this, a subtle glow was placed behind the title of the book and the author's name. These were considered to be the most important pieces of text on the cover of the book, which have been highlighted using this effect to make them representative of glowing stars in the night sky.
