OUGD603 - Degree Show Branding - Pictogram Experimentation

Based on brainstorming ideas about what represents each course, as well as results from the student survey, it was decided to experiment with one of our initial ideas in creating pictograms for each course which can be used both individually for individual course promotion, as well as together in order to represent the university's creativity as a whole. Through this, it was decided to also play on the mosaic idea, using the Leeds Arts University logo as the main shape to contain the pictograms within. Initially, digital sketches were produced based on what I thought would generally represent fine art and graphic design, using a paint pot for fine art and a laptop for graphic design, since typically people from this course responded with words such as 'digital'.

Initially, these were filled with colour, however it was thought that this may make the imagery too detailed and complicated, since pictograms are usually quite minimalistic in their style. For this reason, it was experimented with simply using line drawings and then adding colour through the background that then flows through the transparent drawing.

The idea was to create a mosaic using the university's logo, however upon attempting to place the pieces together, it was found that this shape was not very symmetrical or in its shape which meant that this made it challenging to piece multiple of this shape together, with large gaps forming between the shapes. Therefore, if we were to use this idea, perhaps the logo shape would have to be modified slightly to minimise the amount of gaps.
