OUGD603 - Degree Show Branding - Visual Research and Further Ideas

  • Instead of pictograms, use mosaic pieces to create a typographic image representative of each course. Include: name of course, small image elements related to the course - the university's logo could also be reproduced in a similar way.
  • @joncontino (Instagram) - Mosaic typography - look at how he has also applied this to digital design, type and illustrations, as well as motion graphics. If our physical production ideas do not work, this could be an interesting alternative.

  • Fauxasics: A series of typographic mosaic illustrations by Nicholas Misani: https://absuzeedo.com/node/83619 - "Fauxsaics are lettering-based, mosaic illustrations where the form is dictated by the limitations of traditional mosaic techniques".

  • Create simple imagery by using block colour to separate images/sections - keep it simple and don't make over complicated or details - block colours and outlines. Look at Rio 2007 pictograms as an example.
  • Use Otl Aicher's grid as a base to help lay mosaic pieces in the production process, that also allows an element of underlying consistency throughout all individual pictograms.

  • Create a pictogram for each course which can be used both individually or altogether, placed together to create one big mosaic representing the university's creativity as a whole.
  • OR if this becomes too complicated, create a few general pictograms on creativity in the university as a whole.
  • Create a timelapse video of the individual and whole mosaic's being made - utilised this as motion graphics for social media.
  • Use the Leeds Arts University logo as the main shape to contain all images/pictograms within to show creativity inside the university - the existing logo is also already in the shape of a mosaic piece which will allow all individual pieces to come together to create one whole image - utilise for bigger elements of branding, e.g. brick folly banner.
