OUGD404 - Studio Brief 02 - Photographic Developments

These images show initial experimentation with photographic layouts and developments for the use in an exhibition poster for the Natural History Museum. Since the origami structure is quite complicated in itself, it was decided to keep the layout of these images fairly minimal and the background a light colour compared to the dark colour of the structure in order to help it stand out from the background. Through research into existing exhibition posters for the Natural History Museum, in particular the Treasures exhibition, it was found that the image was typically surrounded by a lot of negative space in order to keep it the main centre of attention, and I have tried to reproduce this idea through these initial photographic developments.

Although it was felt that these images worked well with the simplistic backgrounds, it was decided that they needed an extra element in order to make them slightly more engaging, which led to further experimentation in terms of colour. The hue and saturation of these images were modified to bring a blue tint to the photographs. The colour blue can be associated with ideas of nature and significance, therefore have been used within these photographic developments in order to represent dinosaurs when they were a part of nature and their significance within history and the development of creatures in terms of evolution, etc. Ideas for this were also taken from research into Johannes Itten's colour theory, which looks at different colour contrasts and how these can have different effects on images. These images can be seen to present a contrast of hue in the combination of blue and green.
