OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Initial Ideas Crit

Through feedback, it was suggested that initial idea one should be pursued, using frames from my collage GIF experiments to produce a timeline of events which communicate information on the work of Robert Blackburn in Leeds. Despite this, it was felt that this design needed further development to make it more engaging. One suggestion was that the frames should not all be aligned, but have elements cut away from the design to create diagonal patterns throughout the design. However, it was not clear how this would link to the chosen event. Another idea in terms of layout was to put all relevant information in the format of an on-flight instruction manual or safety card.

The colour scheme was considered a strong point and worked well to communicate design through the 1900's era. However, it was also suggested that this colour could be played with further linking it to other pieces of research, which found that the passenger service in 1919 conducted flights to London and Amsterdam. As a result, I should experiment with using gradients of colour which represent the colours of the British and Dutch flags. This could be quite effective as a double sided print, with the design on each side representing either London or Amsterdam in terms of the event.

It was also suggested that this design should include some written information on the event in order to make it subtly clearer for the audience to understand what the event is and how it celebrates public spaces in Leeds. To do this I could experiment with placing logos in each corner of the design, such as the RAF logo (links to aviation and the Royal Flying Corps) and place relevant information around these.

At this point in the design process, I had not considered paper stock or materials as much as I should have done. This is an important element, which will help to enhance the design overall. It was suggested to experiment with printing onto slightly more obscure materials and stocks, such as a brown paper bag which are typically found on-flight for passengers who are feeling travel sick. Another idea was to continue to work with looking at ways of folding the final print into a paper plane form through adding guides and score lines.
