OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Initial Idea Three

This initial idea was to produce a poster celebrating the work of Robert Blackburn and Olympia Works in Leeds. The poster would be in the style of poster advertisements for Blackburn Aircraft and various other aircraft poster advertisements produced in 1919.

Based on research into these exisiting posters, it was found that they typically used a limited colour palette, either monochrome or large block areas of colour. The most commonly used colours for these were yellow or orange, so therefore decided to use this for the background of the poster. This limited colour palette also meant the idea would have clear links to the processes used to produce it, as the screen printing process uses individual blocks of colour to build up the image and the brief specifically stated that the print had to use at least two colours.

The imagery on these posters also consisted of both type and imagery, mostly depicting the aircrafts themselves. Therefore this idea would include a simple illustration of one of Blackburn’s aircrafts paired with initial type experiments, which continues to link the idea to that dates in which the chosen events took place and essentially celebrates this era.
