Another book we studied was a children's touch and feel book. This allowed us to gain an idea as to how we would construct the illustrations to potentially work with different interactive materials, as well as how we would produce the books themselves to accommodate these. Based on this research it was found that all of these books were typically hardback and used very thick card, as a result of a layer of material between two pieces of card which allows the interactive elements. It was therefore considered that when producing our final books, we should either use hardback case bound or hardback coptic stitch methods of bookbinding in order to allow for the thickness of stock.

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 04 - Children's Book Research
Based on feedback of initial ideas, it was decided to conduct some primary research into the style of children's books that we could link to our own ideas, which involved looking through collections of children's books in the local Waterstones store. One book of particular interest was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This book makes use of different textures to produce it's illustrations. Using this idea we could potentially recreate these textures within our own illustrations rather than cutting elements out of the design that could act as an engaging element of our book that links it to this children's book style. It was also found through studying this book that some of the pages have been cut into different sized layers that reveal new elements of the images below. A consistent hole has also been cut through the illustrations in order to represent the caterpillar eating it's way through the different food items. This links back to initial feedback, which suggested we should have one interactive element that is kept consistent throughout the book, such as the use of googly eyes or lazer cutting different shapes from the designs. This research will also be of help when deciding on layout of the book, potentially considering the use of layers as a form of interaction.
