OUGD406 - Studio Brief 04 - Initial Ideas Crit

Through feedback it was suggested that the concept was strong and that the humorous twist on the illustrations added to the content of the book which would overall make it more engaging. It was felt that the black and white illustrations worked best to communicate our ideas. This minimal colour scheme would keep a consistent and simplistic style throughout the book. Since it was initially decided that this book would be produced on a small scale and of a square format, it was considered that the designs cannot be too complicated for fear of miscommunication of ideas, therefore this minimal colour scheme and style of illustration was agreed upon.

Based on this, another piece of feedback suggested that the style of this book could be compared to that of children's books, in particular touch and feel books. These books typically have sections of the images cut away and replaced with interactive materials that the children and readers can engage with. It was suggested that elements such as these within our own book could potentially add to the humorous content of the book, for example instead of using illustrations to add features to the items we should use googly eyes and keep these in a consistent place throughout the book but would be on different items on each page, such as beans or rice grains.

Other feedback included:
  • Children's book style/square format/thick card.
  • Keep illustrations simple.
  • Cut out sections for different interactive materials/googly eyes on items, keep this consistent throughout the book.
  • Black and white/navy blue and red colour schemes.
  • Look at funny shopping stories from students to use within the book.
  • Create a bookmark in the style of a receipt which offers tips on shopping that accompany the illustrations and stories within the book.
