The process to create the imagery for the wayfinding systems was inspired by ASCII art and concrete poetry which both involve the use of characters and letterforms to form images. ASCII art uses a variety of characters defined by the American coding system. It was decided that this method of production linked to the idea of receipts almost being made up of coded information, as well as the fact that some elements of receipts feature codes of sales and items, for instance. It was decided to accompany these ASCII style images with a pink strip which passes through the image itself. Observations of receipts found this pink effect when till roll is running low and so this was initially reproduced in a digital form to show how it would be used in conjunction with different aspects of the brand’s identity. However, in order to ensure cost-effectiveness and mass production this pink strip would be exposed onto a screen which would allow it to be screen-printed effectively throughout other elements of the brand providing consistency, as well as further links to the exhibition’s theme of traditional print. The stock used to print these systems on was very similar to that of a traditional receipt, with one rough side and another more glossy side.
