Based on feedback, it was decided to continue with the development of a student shopping guide. In order to make this appeal more to students it was decided to produce this in a square format, similar to that of Instagram. Initially it was considered the use of photography, portraying typical student meals and those based on funny shopping stories gained from existing students, in the typical style of instagrammed food, for example mince pies and McDonalds in October. Although this would be consistent with the format of the book, it was decided that this method would not be very cost-effective since it would involve buying food for the purpose of photographing and then would potentially go to waste, going against one of the purposes of this book as a way to save money on food shopping and avoid food waste. Based on this it was decided to use illustrations instead of photographs, which communicate our ideas in a more cartoon-y style.
From this initial idea, it was decided communicate our ideas in a more humorous way and so started experimenting with an illustrative style similar to that of Brosmind studio, who take on a more cartoon-y approach to their work. Based on this, our initial illustrations were developed through adding quirky elements such as adding faces and features to these in order to give them personalities and almost act as characters within the book.
