OUGD406 - Studio Brief 03 - Concept Rationale

The brief for this project was to create the branding for the Leeds College of Art first and second year exhibition. The exhibition itself is based on the celebration of events in the public spaces of Leeds which have helped shape the city in some form. The exhibition will consist of posters produced through traditional print processes, such as screen print and letterpress. Our response to this brief involved creating an identity for the exhibition called ‘THANK YOU, CALL AGAIN’. This aimed to look at the idea of disposability in public spaces, creating links between the disposability of exhibitions themselves as well as traditional printing methods.

In order to do so the final outcomes focused mainly on the idea of receipts, something we considered to be disposable and a familiar form of printed material known to the general public. The designs focused on emulating this visual literacy of receipts in terms of layout, typography and aesthetics. One element of this involves listing ‘items’ as FREE in order to reinforce the idea of public accessibility into the exhibition as well as the public spaces of Leeds. In doing so this also created a focus on what can be freely gained from such an exhibition and what Leeds has gained in terms of its history, politics, culture and society which have all led on to shape the city.
