OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Events Research

1919 Test Flights:
Aviation pioneer, Robert Blackburn had previously conducted test flights in 1909 at Roundhay Park on an area now known as Soldier’s Field. In 1919, a small airport was established on the land which ran flights to London and Amsterdam. Robert Blackburn conducted his first aircraft using materials, such as wood, brass, steel, fabric and string - potential imagery and/or materials.

Ideas:
  • a double-sided screen print with one side folding out into a runway and the other with lines that can be folded into a paper pane.
  • logos positioned in plane windows which relate to this event or similar events which happened at the same place / the history of Roundhay Park / a historical timeline of the park.

Magic Lantern Festival:
The biggest Chinese lantern festival in the UK, celebrating Christmas and Chinese culture. The festival is run by creative director, Ian Xiang and Weli Creative, a company that specialises in cultural exchange projects between China and the West and takes place from November to January. Over 40.000 light bulbs are used for the event, spread over ten acres of the park.

Ideas:
  • a poster celebrating the event and Chinese culture in Leeds.
  • printed onto origami paper so that it can be cut and folded into a chinese lantern / printed onto chinese calendar which rolls up and out - poles at each end.
  • a focus on the idea of light and the 40,000 light bulbs used for the event each year.
