The Bauhaus was a German art school founded by Walter Gropius, which operated from 1919 to 1933, which combined crafts and the fine arts. The Bauhaus style eventually became one of the most influential currents in modern design and led to influence and developments in areas such as art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design and typography.
Dadaism:
Dadaism was an avant-garde art movement, starting in the early 20th Century. This movement was a reaction to the effects of World War I and consisted of various artists who rejected logic, reason and aestheticism of modern capitalist societies so instead worked to produce pieces of art and design which expressed nonsense and irrationality. Processes included collage, sound poetry, manipulated letterforms and sculpture. The movement started in 1916 and ended in 1924.
Since both Dadaism and the Bauhaus were present throughout the era when Robert Blackburn conducted his test flights and opened his passenger service at Roundhay Park, ideas and styles will be taken from both these movements to inform my design ideas. For instance, the use of collage and unstructured typography. Ideas will also be taken in terms of colour schemes. Both these movements use bold colours, in particular red and black, which were used to express discontent with violence and war, therefore similar colours will experimented with in my own type experiments.
